A Witch’s Guide to Successful Money Magic & Prosperity Spells

a witch's guide to money magic and prosperity spells

Lets talk about money magic and prosperity spells.

In my somewhat limited, but 20 year long history of practicing the Craft, I have found that money and love are the two things that make people desperate enough to turn to the craft. I’ll admit that a money spell was one of the first spells I tried. It worked.

And that’s what hooked me in and kept me exploring.

The Nature of Money

The first step to successful money magic or manifesting the goods in your life, is understanding what it is and how its supposed to behave. Money is nothing more than a tool; a way to trade for the goods and services that you need or want. Money is energy; energy is supposed to flow. It comes into your hands and you spend it. Then more comes at you and you spend that. Ebb and Flow.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with saving for a rainy day or putting money aside for a big ticket item. I will never discourage that. Saving money is a very responsible thing.

It only becomes a problem when saving turns into hoarding. When you’re so afraid to spend, you’re essentially telling the universe that you don’t trust it to have your back. You block the flow of energy a.k.a. money.

Your personal money mentality.

The problem for the average person is the mentality that we have to hold onto what we get just in case we don’t get more. In light worker circles its called a “Lack Mentality”. I’m not a light worker. I’m a witch and I’m going to tell you that you can call it what you want but it is still your job to work on it.

Know Thyself is the first rule of the Witch. Part of that means you need to know what your relationship is to money. How do you feel about it? Why do you feel that way?

If your money mentality needs some adjusting, it’s your job and responsibility to work on that. Its not something you can fix in a day or even a year. Like so many other paradigms, its something that needs to be worked on over time.

Take control

Shifting your thoughts and beliefs on money probably needs it’s own post but here’s a place to start.

  1. Write it out. In detail. How do you really feel about money? Write out your memories of lean times and more bountiful times. What was going on? How were you feeling? Really take time to explore all the ways money or a lack there of has affected your life and lively hood.
  2. Consider how you feel about people who have more. “Rich people are crooks” was an idea that I received from my dad. Other people have the belief that “Wealthy people are more important/deserving/valuable”. The beliefs we hold about money are as varied as the people who hold them. You only need to know how you feel.
  3. Change your words. Be very aware of what you say to yourself about money. Quit saying you’re broke or that you can’t afford something. Change the language you use. Instead of saying “I can’t afford that” change it to “I’d rather not spend my money on that right now.” or “My funds are just a little low at the moment.”
  4. Affirmations are great if you believe them, but they have a negative effect if you don’t. “I am happily wealthy” wont create wealth if it leaves a sour taste on your tongue. Try on something money positive that doesn’t make your stomach twist.
  5. Practice generosity, even if its just tipping your waitress more than you usually do or tossing your change in a charity jar. Its a little baby step that will tell the Universe, Ancestors, and Deities that your trust them.

Don’t despair, though. Just because you won’t have a Millionaire Mindset by the next full moon doesn’t mean you should pass on the money magic. In fact, I feel like you could learn a lot by the practice and possible even shift the energy in your favor.

The nature of the spell

What kind of money spell are you thinking of working? Money Magic covers a lot of options. Something to do with a job or promotion? Money to cover unexpected expenses. Extra cash to make life easier? Or are you looking for money to buy something you want? This makes a difference in what kind of spell and ‘ingredients’ you’ll use.

Some guidelines

When ever we do spells there are some general guidelines to keep in mind. Each topic differs slightly but for money magic, the most important guideline is Don’t be Greedy.

Cast for what you need. Cast for what you believe is reasonable. No, you don’t need a million dollars and a winning lottery ticket is unlikely.

Be open to how you get what you ask for.

I once cast a money spell for enough money to get a new couch. A week later, my daughter called to let me know that her step mom bought new furniture and wanted to know if I wanted their 5 year old living room set. I got a couch and two matching chairs. I didn’t get the money but I did get what I wanted.

This actually happens a lot.

What you need to do Money Magic

A clear goal and strong intention are all you really need but every other correlation adds a layer of energy that will boost your intent.

Creating your own spells or tweaking others

There are tons of books and a plethora of blog pages and websites full of spells and different ways to do prosperity work and money magic. That doesn’t including the pins on Pinterest and the graphics on other Social Media channels. Most are a good basis for starting out although you may need to ‘tweak’ them to fit your need or available elements.

Money Magic Elements

Color Magic:

Color correspondence can be used in a number of ways. Most commonly it is used in the color of the candle you will light during your spell work (although white works for everything). You can also add colored altar cloths if you’ll have a permanent space or a spell that lasts a few day.
You may also consider using specific colored bags for mojo/charm bags or ribbons/yarn/thread for tying, wrapping and knotting.

We typically use Green or Gold for money magic and prosperity spells. I tend to lean toward green for money and growth and chose yellow/gold for success and abundance. Of course, me being me, I add a little orange for creativity because no matter how I bring in the income, I’ll enjoy it more if I use my natural creative talents.

Days to work Money Magic:

Over all Thursday is the day for prosperity and abundance spells. Thursday is ruled by the planet Jupiter, and the Gods Thor and Zeus. However Wednesday, ruled by Mercury and Odin himself, would be better for career, job or business related spells and Sunday if your in need of some fame and fortune.

Direction and Element:

If you’re concerned about the direction you call or face, its North. The Element of Earth relates to the physical which includes money and all that it can buy.

Planets and other Celestial Influences that will support your Money Magic:

Jupiter is called upon for expansion, growth, while Venus is for material comforts. When the Moon is in Virgo we will have a little extra boost in spells for financial improvement.
Spells for increasing income should be cast during the Waxing Moon and spells for decreasing debt should be cast during the Waning Moon.

Deities specific for Prosperity and Abundance:

If you work with the Gods and Goddess, there are a few that will help and possibly work behind the scenes on your behalf. I highly suggest you build up a relationship with these Deities before you ask for help with money. However, sometimes if you already have a relationship, they may help before you ask.

Hindu: Ganesh (M) Remover of Obstacles
Lakshmi (F) Goddess of Wealth and Abundance
Greco/Roman: Jupiter/Zeus: God of Expansion and growth
      Pluto/Hades: Lord of Riches
      Abudantia: Goddess of Abundance
Fortuna: Goddess of Fortune and Luck
      Opis: Goddess of Plenty
      Hekate: Goddess of Witches
Celtic: Anu: Great Goddess of Plenty
Bel: God of Sun and Fire
Cernunnos: The Horned God of the Forest
        Dagda: God of Abundance
Rosmerta: Goddess of Wealth and Abundance

Rune/Tarot:

Sometimes we add our divination tools into our spell work, letting the energy of the card help influence the results. If runes are your thing, add the rune Dagaz to your spell. The Wheel of Fortune is the most auspicious if you prefer Tarot, although the Sun and the Ace of Pentacles would be good choices as well.

Wood:

Wood can be added to charm bags or made into charms themselves. They can be shaped into wands for working specific spells. Shavings can be added to homemade incense or burned in ritual fires. For money magic and prosperity spells consider any of the following: Apple, Red Oak, Black Locust, Cypress, Western Red cedar, Yellow Birch

Herbs:

If the herbs are edible, consider adding them to food to enchant it. The energy is consumed with the food and all who partake is blessed with the possibilities. (This is a big part of kitchen witchery and my favorite kind of magic to do.)

Not all herbs are edible, though. So be cautious. Another way to use herbs is to grind them up in a mortar and pestle until they’re powdery. Anoint a candle with a money oil (see below) and roll your candle in the herbs.
You can also add the herbs to a money jar that you shake daily or a mojo bag to carry with you.
Stick basil or cinnamon in your cash register or coin purse for a little every day money magic.

  • allspice
  • almond
  • bay leaf
  • basil
  • bergamot
  • cedar
  • chamomile
  • cinnamon
  • cinquefoil
  • clover
  • mandrake/may apple
  • marjoram
  • mint
  • moonwort
  • myrtle
  • orange mint
  • parsley
  • pecan
  • pine
  • snapdragon
  • sunflower
  • sweet woodrift
  • tonka bean
  • tulip
  • vanilla
  • vervain
  • wheat

Food:

Going back to Kitchen Witchery, these particular foods are traditionally believed to represent prosperity: oats, green pepper, pumpkin, rice. Serve them with meals and don’t forget to offer some to the Ancestors or your Deity of choice.

Crystals:

Crystals and gemstones tend to be categorized alongside the color correspondence charts, with a few exceptions. Green stones are to attract money and growth while yellow stones are used for success. Certain semi-precious stones are just rare or have been used as currency in the past. Some are there to boost the effects of the other stones or elements in your spell. For example, clear quartz amplifies the energy of everything around it. Lodestone (a naturally magnetized piece of magnetite) is used to attract wealth, success, fortunes…anything really. Tiger’s eye is considered a lucky stone. Choose stones that resonate with you.

  • Abalone
  • Agate (green)
  • Aventurine
  • Bloodstone
  • Chrysoprase
  • Emerald
  • Jade
  • Mother-of-Pearl
  • Malachite
  • Opal
  • Pearl
  • Peridot
  • Pyrite (fools’s gold)
  • Ruby
  • Staurolite
  • Tiger Eye (luck)
  • Tourmaline (green)
  • Lodestone (attraction)

Other Symbols:

These are often used symbolically. Adding the symbols or pictures to your spell work, altar or charm bags will boost both your focus and the energy needed to manifest.
Banks, money symbols, dollar signs, checks, cowrie shells, Spanish moss

Money Magic:

Lets get into the fun stuff. I do highly suggest you have fun with it. Start playing with different spells and ingredients to get a feel for what you like and what works for you. Don’t wait until you’re in a desperate situation before trying because it takes sometime to find that sweet spot and also to actually get the money in your hands. This isn’t Hollywood. We can’t wiggle our noses and snap our fingers and create a million dollars our of thin air.

Candle Magic:

Everybody starts out with candle magic. Its effective, easy and doesn’t require a whole lot of hard to find items.

  • Take a green candle (white will substitute for any color). A votive or pillar candle will work well.
  • Carve you name and the amount of money you need in it with a pin or other semi-sharp item.
  • Anoint the candle with oil. It can be a fancy money oil (see below) you make/buy or simply canola or coconut.
  • Roll the candle in crushed or powdered basil (you can sub another dry herb from the list if you don’t have basil). Basil is my go-to for money spells but mint is my second choice.
  • Light the candle and chant the following:

Money come and money grow
Money’s mine, to me it flows.

I like candle magic for the flame. There’s something mesmerizing about watching a flame dance. It helps get me in that mind space where I’m not distracted by the mundane or the millions of other things on my to-do list.

That being said, I don’t do a lot of candle magic. Kids, dogs, cats, wax… Fire. It doesn’t mix well and I always end up ruining altar cloths, furniture and flooring. I still use jar candles or oil lamps to get to the liminal spaces where my focus is clear.

Money oil:

If you’re so inclined and you have essential oils.

Here’s a recipe for a fast money oil.
7 drops patchouli oil
5 drops cedar wood oil
4 drops vetivert
2 drops ginger oil
1/8th cup oil (jojoba, safflower, sunflower)

Charms, Spell Jars and Mojo Bags

Charms

These are fun because you can use all the fun stuff and your creativity. I do a lot of this.

Charms can be anything really. A lucky rabbits foot is part of our collective understanding of a good luck charm. A piece of jewelry charged with good intentions is another option. Or more creatively, a charm could be a bit of embroidery floss and some cowry shells that you knot together in a specific way that you carry in your pocket. There are lots of ways to do some effective money magic with just the things laying around your house.

money magic charms

Here’s a charm I made. Its a piece of apple wood from a branch that was pruned off a friends tree. The symbols and words I found in a book called Crone’s Book of Charms & Spells by Valerie Worth . I’ve also made similar charms out of polymer clay. Its actually much easier to carve in the clay than burn on the wood. Apple wood is incredibly hard.

The first part of the magic is in the making; You have the time to focus on your intentions while you create. The second is in how you use it. For example, I will include this apple wood token in pretty much every prosperity spell I do in the future. I’ll keep it near the money bowl when I’m home and keep it at my desk when I’m working.

Spell Jars

Money magic spell jar

Here’s a money jar I whipped up a few years ago. The jar itself was an empty spice jar. Inside is a mix of basil and mint, a few allspice corms, some shards of cinnamon bark and a few small moonwort seed pods (or as we’ve always called them, money pods.)

I stuck in a chunk of Spanish moss from my craft cabinet. It stays green and I wanted that energy. I also added some gemstone chips, mostly green ones like aventurine and jade but also some pyrite and quartz. Finally I added 3 dimes. (3 has always been my number).

I put the top on and wrapped it with a olive green sari silk ribbon. Then I took some green bamboo cording to hang charms. There’s a gold sparkly resin teardrop and a green enamel butterfly (transformation).

Then I tied 9 brass coin charms. (I lost one at some point there’s only 8 now *shrug*)
Finally I dripped green wax over the tip to keep a nosy little boy from dumping it. Of course the nosy little boy chipped off most of the wax but no harm no foul.

This jar sits on my desk and whenever I sit down to work, I give it a shake to remind my self and my ancestors that I’m willing and ready to receive whatever sales they want to send my way.

Mojo Bags

Mojo bags are pretty much the same as spell jars only you put all your ingredients in a cloth bag and carry it with you. I’ve made the villagers little mojo bags for their cars. I put a few gem stones and some sage leaves in little velvet or chiffon drawstring bags to keep their cars safe (and them safe while their driving). I suggest a green bag with some appropriate gems and herbs. You can add some gold coins and even dollars if you want.

Money Bowls and the Trinka Five

I don’t remember when or where I learned about the Trinka 5 money spell but I’ve been using it for years. A quick google search will result in a number of different ways to perform it and that it’s pretty old money magic. Some of the suggested spells are very elaborate and strict, others more relaxed. My practice is of the relaxed variety.

I’ve always kept a money bowl; a small dish to catch spare change from my pockets. When I learned the rhyme, it became habit to recite it as I dropped my change in the dish.

Trinka 5, Trinka 5
Ancient Spirits come alive.
Money grow and money thrive
By the power of Trinka 5

See how catchy that is! The purpose behind it is to keep the cash flowing into your life.

This spell is of Romany Gypsy descent. That is all that is known about it. Some speculate that “Trinka 5” refers to the Ancient Spirits of the 5 elements; fire, water, air, earth & Spirit. If you know more about it or have heard something different, please let me know!

Ideally, one would take that spare change and donate it to a charity in honor of the Ancient spirits. At my house, more often than not, that spare change was used to pay the Paleta Man when my kids begged for ice cream. Of course I had to get some for their friends too… Maybe not charity but I guess you could call it generosity.
I just know that money was always flowing when I was reciting the rhyme, so I probably didn’t piss off the Spirits.

7 Dimes Spell

The seven dimes spell is another popular prosperity spell that has many variations. Sometimes you drop them in a jar along with a note written with the amount you need. Some suggest adding the charged dimes to a mojo bag with supportive herbs, including a bay leaf with your name and need written on it.

My favorite way to do this money magic is by empowering the 7 dimes with prosperity intentions, stating what you need and then randomly dropping them in different places around town for other people to find. Good juju in action!

A catchy rhyme that works well with the dime spell is as follows:

I first found the rhyme in Everyday Magic by Dorothy Morrison back in the early 2000’s .

Toward this wish the money grows
By leaps and bounds it overflows
Coins that jingle, coins that shine
Come to me now. You are mine.

Why 7?

The importance and significance of the number 7 goes back to the dawn of civilization. It was prominent in many world religions, mythologies and even Freemasonry. Its important in the Bible and the Qur’an. It is considered a number of perfection and sign of completion

In Angel numbers, 7 signifies that you are on the right path and will soon overcome the obstacles that stand in your way.

If you’re not feeling 7, other numbers work too. For myself, I tend to rely on the numbers 3 or 9.

Rose of Jericho

The Rose of Jericho is also known as the Resurrection plant. It is a desert fern that can live up to 50 years in a dormant state if no water is available. It doesn’t even need dirt.

The idea behind using the Resurrection Plant in a spell is to ‘resurrect’ a loss. Whether its a lost job or lost income. Possibly even a stock market loss. If you had an income and now you don’t then this is the kind of money magic you want to work.

For example, The Renaissance Man was considered essential during the shut down last spring. We never lost a paycheck but we did lose the quarterly bonuses that make life a little easier.

The Rose of Jericho comes as a dry little ball that looks a lot like a mini tumble weed.
(fact-check, I’ve never actually seen a tumbleweed up close)

Create your own Ritual

You can write the spell to fit to your needs.
Rinse your Rose of Jerico off with water and place in a shallow bowl. Pour spring water or, better yet, moon water until the roots are submerged. It’ll start to open right away but take a full 24 hours to fully open. This is where you would build your energy and focus your intentions.

You should change the water daily. The spent water would make a great offering. I like to offer it to Hekate by pouring it on my mugwort plant. Continue to change the water daily while focusing on your intention until you see the money start to roll in. At that point you can let it dry out and “go to sleep”.

Save it for the next time you need to resurrect some prosperity in your life again.
You can boost it by adding coins or gemstones to the dish. If you come up with a clever rhyme, let me know because I suck at rhyming.

ESAU/E square

There’s not much on the internet about this particular spell. I found it in a book called The Modern Witch’s Guide to Magic and Spells by Sarah Lyddon Morrison. The book itself wasn’t particularly memorable but the spell was.

ESAU spell

Its essentially a wish spell. You focus on what you want; really feel into it. Then you write the word on parchment paper in a square, (see picture) either with black ink or blood from the ring finger of your left hand.
(This is more powerful because it connects the wish to you)
Fold the paper and keep it under your pillow or in a safe and secure place until the spell comes into fruition.
At that point you can burn the parchment to releases the energy.

Success!

This was one of the first spells I did that worked.

I was brand new and eager to experiment. I remember sitting on the bathroom floor, candles burning on the vanity and the edge of the tub. My focus was completely zeroed in on manifesting $10,000.

Ya, I know, a little excessive. I felt like that amount would solve all my problems. It would pay off some debts that were hanging over me, fill the fridge and pantry, get me and the kids some summer clothes and have a little left over to put in the bank.

I was giddy with excitement to see if this would work. If it didn’t, it didn’t matter because I could just try a different spell. It was new and the possibilities were endless.

I pricked my left ring finger with a needle as suggested (because the head of a pin would block the energy flow)and proceeded slowly and awkwardly to write the word. I’m right handed. I had to stop a couple times to refer back to the picture to make sure I was doing it right and once to re-poke my finger when the blood stopped. It wasn’t pretty or neat but it was done. So I folded the paper and stuck it under my pillow.

A few weeks later the Idiot won the little league raffle and came home with 7 grand. Not bad for my first spell.

However it didn’t solve any of my problems. He won the money and he decided he was buying a pool and building a deck for it. The problem wasn’t lack of funds but the Idiot’s inability to manage them wisely. Fortunately he’s no longer my problem.

Where did the ESAU square come from?

Thinking back to that spell, knowing now, all the things I didn’t know then, I’m shocked and a little horrified by my cavalier attitude about casting spells I knew nothing about. So I did a little research and found very little information. The following clip by Rev. Don Lewis is the closest I could find.

Quick recap: The word (ESAU/E) itself means nothing and doesn’t have to relate to your goal. It’s based in old ceremonial magic that requires you to blindly trust the process. The process itself plays on your emotions to build the energy and then distract you with the action (writing with your left ring finger) which allows you to connect to your higher self.

The only symbolic part is the square itself. Squares represent the stability and bring your desires into the physical realm.

Infant of Prague Statue

This is a catholic custom, not so much a spell, but there’s a fine line between pagan and catholic so I’m including it. Shortly after I married the idiot back in ‘92, His Slovenian Grandmother gave me an Infant of Prague statue. It was customary. Her own mother gave one to all the grandchildren when they were married and she wanted to continue the tradition

I was touched and flattered. I didn’t grow up in a house that carried on traditions (unless you count shaming pre-marital pregnancies and co-dependency which was not nearly as fun as religious statues and superstition)

My mother-in-law explained that I was to put it in a place where it would face the front door and always keep a few coins under his skirt. The one I had actually had a satin robe that you could take off to wash or change out. It hid money very well. She also told me that once a week when I dusted, I should remember to thank Baby Jesus for all the blessings in our life.

The purpose of this was to keep the money flowing in. I’m pretty sure the ‘dusting’ part was a reminder that I was supposed to clean regularly. She didn’t have much faith in my housekeeping abilities – and with good reason. I was very young and it took me awhile to get the hang of adulting.

I kept it long after I got divorced and Baby Jesus always had a few coins under his skirt. It took me a lot longer to remember the weekly dusting, so he didn’t get thanked very often.

History and Folklore

The history of the Infant of Prague goes back 600 years to Medieval Spain. It has a very rich history and went through phases of being popular and being damaged and neglected. It also traveled all over Europe.

In the 15th century, at the beginning of a revival period. A monk, Father Cyril, found the Infant again. Its hands were damaged. He wrote about how the Baby Jesus spoke to him,

Have pity on me and I will have pity on you. Give me my hands and I will give you peace. The more you honor me, the more I will bless you.

He was determined to restore the statue but was having a hard time finding the money to do so. The Baby Jesus spoke to him again, “Place me near the entrance of the sacristy and you will receive aid.”

Within days the monastery received money and was never lacking again.
And that is why it should always face the front door. Suffice to say, Prague became a place of miracles and many people throughout Europe partook in a pilgrimage to pray to the Infant Jesus of Prague.

I love the stories like that. They remind me of magic.

Money magic is great because it sends your desires out into the Universe but more importantly they align your own energy to a vibration that attracts more abundance. Unfortunately, spell work alone won’t improve your life. Now that you’ve cast your spells and created you magical items, you need to go out and do things.

Yep! You need to do the things every other muggle does to generate income and maintain it. If what you’ve been doing isn’t working or you need something extra, You, my lovely witch, have tools at your disposal that muggles don’t.

Grab your cards.

Tarot guidance

I found a fun little pin on Pinterest while I was searching Tarot stuff. I feel like this would be a good spread to use when you’re still in the brainstorming stage of bringing in more income.

To bring money to you. Shuffle you cards while asking for guidance on income generating ideas. start flipping. Set aside card numbers 1, 5, 10, 20, 50. Read them in order.

I tried it for fun. I wasn’t really looking for new ways to bring in money. The cards told me to do exactly what I was supposed to be doing. Writing, teaching, sharing, and networking.
I’d love to hear if the cards tell you anything surprising or inspiring.

I know this is really long and wordy and I hope that it gives you some more tools to take control of your personal money situation. Witchcraft is all about empowering your self and others.
