Back in December, I had this idea of a Zodiac challenge.
It hit me that I could harness the power of the stars, or tap into the zodiac energies every month and it could help support my endeavors in developing healthy habits and achieving my yearly goals. (I admit, I may be late to the party!)
Lets talk about Astrology. I am far from being an expert but I like to think I have a working knowledge of the signs and their influence simply because I’ve been dabbling in it since I was a kid.
When I presented the idea to my girls they seemed receptive and a little confused. So I set to work researching possible focuses that would work with our overall goals.
Before I get into the individual challenges and the energies of each Zodiac influence, I want to give a quick review of how we understand our signs on a personal level.
I know there are a lot of people out in the world that dismiss Astrology as B.S. I also know there are people out there that want to believe but don’t see any connection to the traits of their signs. And don’t get me started on the daily horoscopes.
There are many aspects that make up our personalities, such as genetics, childhood experiences, birth order and parental expectations. Our zodiac sign is only one tool to help us know ourselves a little better.
A Brief Introduction
Most of us know our ‘sign’. This would be our Sun Sign, or the Zodiac sign that the sun was traveling through when we were born. This sign give us insight into our personalities and quirks.
What isn’t as popularly known is the fact that we also have other signs such as our moon sign and rising sign. Both influence our personalities in different ways. There are different signs in each House of our personal zodiac or natal chart. Each has influence over different aspects of our lives.
You can find your natal chart here.
I’m not getting into the whole chart, its beyond my own personal knowledge base but I do think its important to take a rough over view of the 3 major influencing signs as well as the elements and mode of each sign.
These three will help us to understand ourselves better to we can tap into the energies and harness the power of the stars to make the current vibes work for us.
The Power of your Sun Sign
We’ll start with the sun sign. This is the one you look up for your horoscope and begins to explain your personality.
The truth is your sun sign is the personality traits that you will grow into. In other words, the ones that make up the core of your truth. There are positive traits as well as negative traits. The positive traits are what you do when you completely at ease; the negative traits are the ones that show up when we’re feeling defensive or insecure.
For example, My sun sign is Cancer. Cancer is the universal care-taker, its about nurturing and catering to the welfare of others, however, at its worst it displays moodiness and sensitivity. Like the crab that represents the sign, they will retreat into their shell and lash out with their sharp pincer’s when threatened.
I’ve always been the care-taker. I may not have always been good at it but its always been the role I gravitate to. While I’m not as nearly as moody or sensitive as I used to be when I was younger, I still have the tendency to retreat into my shell and snap at people when I’m stressed out.
Our Sun sign is the truth of who we are but its not the only sign that defines our personalities.
Your Moon Sign and the Secret Life
Our moon sign, or the sign the moon was in at the moment of our birth, represents our emotions and our inner world. It defines the parts just under the surface that we don’t share with everyone. In other words, it reflects those things we hold close; our hopes and dreams, our hurts and fears, our secrets.
My moon is in Scorpio. Scorpio is known to be secretive, powerful and intense. It also feels deeply and seek truth like a bloodhound. Scorpio are fierce and tend to lean toward taboo subjects.
As a Cancer child, I was incredibly sensitive and my feelings were easily hurt but because of my Scorpio moon I worked really hard to not let anyone know about my wounds.
The Power of Your Rising Sign and the You Everyone Sees
Our rising sign or Ascendant is the mask that we show when we first meet others. Its what other people see before they get to know us. It will be how others describe you, more so that what you see in yourself.
My Rising Sign is in Pisces and its why everyone has always described me as easy-going and laid back. Pisces is know for it’s go-with-the-flow energy. It is known to be dreamy, peace-loving and emotionally tender, often retreating into a dreamworld when reality gets too rough.
What about the Elements?
The Zodiac signs are separated into four elemental energies: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. As such, there are three signs under each element. The energy of the elements will have a strong influence in the lives of people born under the signs. I also believe the energy affects the rest of the world during its reign.
Earth relates to the physical realm. The signs categorized as Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. These three signs focus on our physical bodies and physical surroundings. Likewise, they stress importance on nature, survival, prosperity and security.
Air relates to mind, thought, and communication. The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. These three signs are concerned with wisdom, intellect and truth. They seek knowledge and the powers of the mind.
Fire relates to energy, enthusiasm, and ambition. The Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. These three signs are all about intense action and making things happen.
Water relates to emotions. The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These three signs are focused on feelings and emotions there fore the main concern is the ebb and flow of our emotional lives and how we’re connected through our shared experience.
What the heck is a mode?
Good Question. The mode is the way in which each sign operates. Another way to think of it is: The way in which each sign directs energy to produce change.
There are three modes: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutible. There are four signs in each mode.
Cardinal signs take the energy from within themselves and project it outward in an attempt to manipulate their environment through actions and willpower. These are the natural leaders, the planners, as well as the ones with the great ideas. The four cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn
Fixed signs draw energy inward and hold it within themselves. They then become the embodiment of this energy and radiate it outward. These are the stable, dependable ones; the doers. The Fixed signs include Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.
Mutable signs swirls and spirals the energy. They are the most flexible and can shift focus the most easily. The Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.
Overall
So, in conclusion, every sign has an elemental energy as well as a mode of operation that manifests itself into energy that we can tap into. Each sign is different and no two signs have the same element and mode.
Don’t worry if you’re find this all a little confusing. It’ll make more sense as we go through the months.
Each month I’ll post the reigning sign and its attribute. I talk a little bit about the myth and the history because I’m a geek like that.
Then I’ll break down what it means to each individual as a sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign. Most importantly, we’ll discuss how to ride the wave toward your goals and how to harness the power of those stars.
